Serial Casting

Serial casting is a process of casting the limb in consecutive casts to improve the position of the joint that is being addressed.

It is a non-invasive, conservative treatment method often used for pathological toe walking and tight plantar flexors. The walking/weightbearing casts are applied to provide a prolonged stretch on the plantar flexor muscle group.  This treatment method is often combined with Botox injections that would be administered by the treating physician.

Your child will be able to continue to engage in all activities except for bathing.  This may take some ingenuity as the cast should not get wet.

Your Orthotist will help you navigate the do’s and don’ts and will work with you and your child’s healthcare team to decide on the most appropriate protocol.
